Basic Cross Country Course at Waikerie

Waikerie Gliding Club is running the popular Basic Cross Country course again this year: Monday 2 to Saturday 7 December 2002.

The x-c courses give you a chance to see what real gliding is all about. Waikerie is renowned for its cross-country friendly countryside and pilots.

The minimum requirement to join us for the course is you must have, and show, your GFA "C" certificate. This is the recognised minimum for the next step to cross country flight. Also, you need to aerotow rated, and preferably current.

What does the course include?

During the week you will be flying in our Twin Astirs with our x-c coaches, as well as flying one on one in lead and follow tasks. This will be with a coach or another pilot attending the course at different times. A ride with a coach in the Duo Discus can be arranged for those who want to go a bit further, or you can join in the chase with the performance pilots.

We will be having lectures on most topics associated with x-c flight:

Map reading, Navigation, Thermalling techniques, McCready flying, Final glides, Outlanding, Task preparation, How to get the most out of you, your day and the glider.

The course is tailored to the skill level of the pilots attending. We have many repeat pilots who love the flying and still want to learn more. Many do not have the chance to make the break away from glide range of the field, at their home club, until they have a good grasp of x-c.

What does it cost?

The course fee which is also your deposit to secure your position on the course is $200. This covers the cost of your coaches, temptrace flights, briefings and any handout material we supply.

You'll still have to pay for your own launches, glider hire, accommodation, etc. If you do not have your own glider you are quite welcome to bring one from your club with you.

We also have a fleet of gliders you are able to hire from us. We are making our gliders available for casual hire to course members for $30 per hour. Aero Tows are at $5.50 per minute. With our 235hp and 250hp Pawnees you are up there in good time.

Accommodation, meals, bookings

Accommodation can be on field in our dormitories and other style accommodation: for more information on this see this page. Dormitory beds are 4 share room at $22 per night. We will be making evening meals available for those who wish to partake or you can prepare your own in our well appointed pilot's kitchen or use our BBQ.

Be sure to book your accommodation with us if you need a bed when you register your deposit.

We will only be able to accommodate a limited number of pilots on this course. We always have a lot of interested pilots but only those who book a seat, get a ride!
